Will I only speak English? Will there be other students from my country?

This is a very real fear that many students have. It is very difficult to always speak in English if the people around you are speaking together and indeed speaking to you in your mother tongue. Unfortunately, it is human nature to seek the easiest route and if that is communicating in your own language many people will do it even if they are paying to learn English. You may feel stupid if you insist on speaking in English and will probably lose the battle and resort to your own language.

So why is MovingOn Courses so confident that you will only speak in English?

Firstly, remember that you live with your teachers. In summer you live in a university residence and there is a teacher in every apartment

If you choose our fully intensive option with afternoon activities/trips then you will spend the whole day with the teachers. Please note that the teachers continue working as teachers and do not simply attend the trips for tourism. They will correct you, help with any structures or new vocabulary etc. Obviously they will impose 100% English. It is just like being in a classroom environment.

More things to have in mind:

When you arrive on the course we will remind you that any time you spend speaking another language is a waste of your time and money. However, we will also appeal to your conscience and remind you that if you do not speak 100% English you will waste the time and money of your colleagues. And crucially, if you do not speak 100% English you will be destroying our business. Guess what! We will not let you do that and if you do we will ask you to leave the course and we will return your money.

The homestay courses in Belfast (available all year – www. )

Talking about other other courses.

Remember if a course offers you the guarantee of only a few students of the same nationality in your class there will be other students of your nationality attending other classes. You need to consider how much free time you will have when there is no teacher to ensure you only speak English.

Which is best: live in with an English family or live in a residence or shared flat etc?

We have to bare in mind your priorities. Are you visiting an English language country solely to learn English or are you thinking of combining an English language learning experience with a cultural experience. Or perhaps you are just looking for a good holiday abroad and if you learn some English then you are pleasantly surprised.

All this series of question and answer will be addressed at people who wish to learn English as fast as possible hope that some of these students wish to learn English in a different environment. MovingOn Courses offers

Hey, it can also be considered a call for help and references.

Anyway, i have since come across a similar website that is perhaps a little more commecial but nontheless equally useful.

The web http://mnemosyne-proj.org/ seems to offer a systemised way to learn a language through flash cards.

MovingOn Courses offers intensive residential English courses so these systems are pretty much our antithesis but that does not mean that they cannot be combined with one of our wonderful course

All feedback about any quick or alternative learning method woudl be much appreciatec

Look for podcasts – there you have an easy enjoyable route to language learning!

Learn a language faster and not with MovingOn Courses

It is not normal for us to recommend another company or another website. This is not because we do not want to lose students but rather because we do not have time to fully check out other centres or language resources. We do not want to recommend an alternative way to learn a language, especially English, without knowing the quality of the language centre or language system involved.

Anyway, the point is that I came across an article about how to go about memorising information. Bugger, got to check who has written this wonderful article. Below i give my own summary.

Thanks to the work of many psychologists over many years a guy called has put together a software programme that helps people memorise information better. Notice I did not say improve your memory. The idea/concept is to use less time to memorise information because you learn and relearn the information at the right time, with the right intensity etc

For the learning process you need to maximise/minimise your time spent learning. It may seem obvious so far but various psychologists have investigated how to best go about the learning process and some of their finding are contra intuitive.

The contra intuitive aspect explains that just because you memorise something frequently and find that you seem to know it perfectly after several repetitions does not mean that you can remember this information long term.

My personal summary for remembering information is as follows. The more difficult it is to remember something the better you will remember it long term (of course after having retrieved this information from your memory

For the moment I am still thinking how this applies to the English language courses offered by ourselves.

If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated.

We offer the opp

Oh and this not even a full on recommendation because we are yet to try out this software.

we will fillout the post shortly – for the moment it is an experiment

Go learn your language of choice

Well, we and our English classes are finally established for 2011 through to July 2012.

English classes will take place in our home here in Belfast and only 15 mins walk to Belfast city centre.

We are located next to Ormeau golf course. It is not a municipal golf course but like most golf courses it is not totally private. Visitors are welcome, it is far more attractive than most urban golf courses and green fees are very reasonable.

Please note we are not restricting our offer of “ learn English with golf” to playing golf on this local course. We will happily take you to any golf courses around Belfast.

You can opt to play golf alone or be accompanied by your teacher so that you learn a little more English while you enjoy playing golf.

Pricing is simple: you pay for your English classes and pay your own green fees. If you wish to be accompanied on the course then you need to pay the green fees for your English teacher. We have left a note in the local golf course so hopefully we can offer find local golf enthusiasts to share a round of golf with you.

Whatever the option we assure you that you will learn as much English or more English than on any other course. Addtionally, if you think you find a better option please let us know and we will explain why it is not and/or offer you a better price.

The new homestay location of Belfast - for our English classes – has been put back by one week. The good news for our English students is that we have rented a wonderful house (30 Cushendal) in Ballycastle in the very north of Northern Ireland. We have wonderful sea views, there is a golf course on our doorstep and the Giant’s Causeway is only 20 minutes away etc etc. The English accent is not the easiest to understand. I went to a local pub to see Liverpool football club thrashed by Spurs and although most of the people were supporting Liverpool, I could only understand half of what they said. Little hope for our English students. However, I am sure Sonia will prepare them well in her English classes.

The following are the comments made by various English teachers for our 2011 summer English course:

They already know that I have added a few phrases such English language course so please do not think that thses guys are too repetetive in their use of the English language.

Karen from North Carolina:

It is my first time teaching at Moving on Courses and I would strongly encourage individuals that want to learn English to join this unconventional yet highly effective program. Prior to joining Moving on courses I had spent many years traveling the world while teaching others in various subjects such as English. This program was the seventh country for me to teach in and the one that truly stands out the most because of the fast rate of improvement I’ve witnessed among English learners. The experience I’ve had as a teacher here has been amazing but most of all very rewarding because I can look back at this time and recall individuals that started the program with not even knowing how to say barely anything in English yet end up being able to have conversations within a short amount of time all because of the intensity and unique way of teaching that Moving on courses has to offer. ..

Roger with a BBC accent

Why teach English with MovingOn?

My association with MovingOn English courses goes right back to the Company’s earliest days (15 years or more, if memory serves me right). Am I a glutton for punishment or is there really something worthwhile about spending a summer as part of the MovingOn teaching team? I like to think that it’s the latter…

I know that it sounds like a cliché, but over the years I really have met many interesting people, both English students and English teachers. Some have been downright weird, but others have become valued colleagues and contacts.

It is always gratifying to welcome students back for a second bite at the cherry. It shows that we must be doing something right. By the same token, it is always good to welcome new students that have decided to try the MovingOn experience because it has been recommended to them by one of our past students. Obviously becasue they have learnt plenty of English but also becasue they have enjoyed their learning experience.

Students come from all walks life and in a variety of hues and sizes. I think the youngest we have had on the main English course (as opposed to the Junior Course)was a 15 year old Russian who joined us in Cork. He opted for the main course despite his age and was mature enough to be able to fit in with the rest of the group with no problem whatsoever. The eldest was a 67 year-old architect who lists walking as one of his pastimes, and was able to walk the socks off some much younger classmates and indeed the English teachers, especially going up Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh or hiking around the Scottish Highlands. During my time with MovingOn we have had students from as far afield as Russia going north, Japan if we look to the east, and Honduras, Brazil or Venezuela if we head west. In fact, I still carry a ‘10 Lempira’ note in my wallet signed for me by “Miss Honduras” (Thanks Ale…)

Rory from Cork: We do not usually have teachers who are from Cork because we feel you will have enough contact with the local accent anyway. However Rory is a special case.

Hello,
My name is Rory and I am an Irish, international teacher of English. I have worked in schools in England, Poland, Ireland, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam, teaching: children, young people and adults.

There is always laughter, music and conversation in my classes.

I especially enjoy “Moving On Courses” where the students are from many countries and together we experience the beauty and fun of Cork City and County.

Learn English in the South of Ireland !

MovingOn Courses (ie Sonia and Gavin) debated another trip abroad to Yemen or even a switch to Oman or Japan but Belfast has won the battle, or should I say that Sonia has won the battle! Anyway, just as we did April to July, we will rent a large house in Belfast and offer the same all-day English system that we always offer but inevitably with many more one to one English classes. We will have another English language teacher staying in the house and hope to be able to have small groups (with big discounts). During the summer course it is only possible to opt for a full week of trips or no trips. During the rest of the year we do not have the same transport demands and so can offer the option of choosing to attend a trip on a daily basis.

We now have plenty of students that have attended our one to one or homestay course so plenty of testimonials are available on request.
